First developed in 1976, the Cirkante extendable dining table by Bob Van Der Berghe for Tranekaer became a distinctive example of functional postmodern Danish furniture. This particular example dates from around 1990 and combines a sculptural design with a practical extending mechanism, allowing the table to accommodate up to eight people.
The table is crafted from oak and features a distinctive square centerpiece in removable black Royal marble positioned at the centre of the tabletop. The warm, natural character of the oak contrasts beautifully with the deep, polished appearance of the marble, creating a refined yet architectural look.
One of the defining features of the Cirkante is its extendable construction. Designed to offer generous seating while maintaining a relatively compact footprint when not extended, the table reflects an approach to furniture design that places equal importance on aesthetics and everyday functionality. This makes it particularly relevant today, as smaller living spaces increasingly require furniture that can adapt to different needs.
With its bold geometric form, natural oak construction and striking marble detail, the Cirkante works beautifully in contemporary, minimalist, postmodern and eclectic interiors. Whether used as a dining table or displayed as a statement piece, its distinctive proportions and innovative design give it a strong presence.
